1. Virtual Prototyping or Early Validation in the Market of Industrial Communication Equipment (suitable for Master Students in Robotics, Embedded Systems, Software or similar)
In this master’s thesis, one or two students will investigate ways for virtual prototyping at Westermo. We want you to investigate possible ways for the next step towards for Virtual Prototyping or Early Validation. This could mean that students would implement a model-based approach for improving communication in the early phases of project development, and/or to simulate aspects of products. The end goal is for Westermo to speed up product development or to reduce the number of prototypes needed ultimately leading to shorter time to market.
2. Modernising of Legacy Systems with Containers (Suitable for Bachelor students in Networks, Computer Science or similar)
In this bachelor's thesis, one or two students will explore upgrade solutions of legacy networks with a containerized application, meaning a self-contained, lightweight and portable software applications that can run in the switches and routers of the network. The work includes gathering requirements, implementing a solution, and validating its functionality. The project will be conducted at Westermo’s Västerås site, with supervision from MDU and Westermo professionals.
In this thesis, the students could explore, for example:
- Integrating IEC 61850 MMS support to enhance interoperability.
- Enhancing Deep Packet Inspection for a legacy protocol like Modbus.
- Replacing a PLC with a container application, using an I/O module with an Ethernet interface.
This work package aims to provide a comprehensive learning experience, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application in a real-world setting. Expected skills after thesis includes:
- Understanding of the complexities involved in upgrading legacy systems.
- Competence in understanding and developing containerized applications.
- Enhanced programming capabilities.
- Project management skills, including requirement elicitation, testing, and effective communication
